Bonsai is the Japanese art of growing small trees in containers. The term bonsai can also refer to the trees themselves. Utilizing art coupled with science, the artist thoughtfully cultivates the bonsai tree as it grows in its container, producing a miniature representation of a magnificent full-sized tree or forest of trees natural and untouched by humankind. A bonsai tree is a constantly changing, living work of art, requiring constant care to insure artistic integrity and plant vigor.

This presentation will include the topics of plant material, containers, tools, styles, horticultural techniques, and artistic design. Demonstration will also be included.

An insatiable reader of books and publications on bonsai, Eric Walberg began learning about and creating bonsai 23 years ago. Since then, he has attended most bonsai club shows throughout Northern California and belonged to several bonsai clubs himself. He has traveled to Japan to observe bonsai and applied the study of ceramics to the making of bonsai containers. He has demonstrated bonsai at the annual Obon Festival in Salinas.

In addition to being a bonsai artist, Eric is a flamenco guitarist and began studying flamenco guitar and bonsai at about the same time. Among the features of this presentation, he will play flamenco guitar.
